PRIZE. (Italy). Houses in Montecarmelo by OOIIO Arquitectura wins Bronze A’Design Award.

The Houses in Montecarmelo, designed and built by OOIIO Arquitectura win the Bronze A’Design Award for their high architectural quality as single-family residential projects.

It is a work that has involved a great effort for the entire OOIIO Arquitectura team, but that we have carried out with great love and dedication for clients for whom it has been a pleasure to work.

The semi-detached houses in Montecarmelo by OOIIO aim to respond through creativity and imagination to an urban context “without a soul”. Despite being one of the most sought-after new residential neighbourhoods in the city of Madrid, Montecarmelo lacks attractive urban spaces and most of the buildings built there do not have much architectural appeal.

The homes proposed by OOIIO aim to play with their shape and generate a series of volumes that enter and exit the façade, so that they self-project shadows on the building itself, thus reducing the exposure of the façades to the strong Madrid sun.

This search for answers to sun protection has also helped architects to find inspiration in vernacular architecture and the esparto blinds with which the sun is traditionally combated in southern areas of Spain, to develop façade cladding that imitates the rough texture of blinds and helps to protect the interior.

The international awards ceremony, cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis, was to be held at the Teatro Sociale in the town of Olmo facing Lake Como, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, in May 2020.

We hope that the trajectory of the OOIIO architecture studio continues on this good path and that they can soon surprise us with new designs of unique residential architecture.
